Tesla Model Y Audio Upgrade — Focal INSIDE Flax Speakers | Car Audio Sydney
Tesla's "Premium Audio" label sets expectations that the factory system doesn't quite meet. The processing is actually surprisingly good — Tesla's built-in time alignment and EQ is better than most OEM systems — but the speakers themselves are the weak link.
This Model Y RWD got a full front stage replacement using Focal INSIDE plug and play Flax speakers. Eight drivers in total — tweeters, midranges, and the 8-inch woofers in the front doors — all swapped to Focal's Flax cone units on direct-fit Tesla-specific mounts. No cutting, no modification to the car's wiring or software.
Because Tesla's factory DSP is already doing useful work, we didn't add an external amplifier or processor on this build. The Focal drivers are efficient enough that the factory amp drives them cleanly, and the existing time alignment carried across. What changed was everything about the texture and detail of the sound — the Flax cone material is notably more natural and less fatiguing than the OEM paper drivers.
The factory subwoofer was turned down rather than removed — the Focal 8-inch woofers in the doors handle bass down to a point where the sub becomes more of a supplement than a necessity.
